Entering Premier League’s Hall of Fame

The Premier League has announced Sergio was part of the 2022 Hall of Fame inductees. This makes him the first non-European player to gain this recognition. Among the other players selected are his former team-mate Vincent Kompany, as well as other retired players whose inclusion has been announced in recent weeks – Didier Drogba (Chelsea), Paul Scholes (Manchester United), Peter Schmeichel (Man United, Aston Villa, Man City), Ian Wright (Crystal Palace, Arsenal, West Ham), Wayne Rooney (Man United, Everton) and Patrick Vieira (Arsenal, Man City).

Over social media, Kun expressed his gratitude, saying: "Many thanks to the Premier League for this recognition, it makes me proud. Being inducted to the Hall of Fame gives me real perspective on the road that took me here. I'm thrilled and I want to share this honour with my club, Manchester City, and all my team-mates."

Sergio is the top foreign scorer of the history of the Premier League with a tally of 184 goals. He joined Manchester City in the 2011-12 season, and racked up 5 titles across 10 seasons since. His last-ditch effort goal on QPR during injury time – the now mythical 93:20 – crowned City as Premier League champions for the first time in 44 years.

Entry to the Hall of Fame is the Premier League's recognition for Sergio's legacy – an honour reserved for the most influential players since the League's creation in 1992. The current Hall of Fame list is composed of 16 individuals. It was established in April 2021, bringing in first the legendary Alan Shearer and Thiery Henry, to then incorporate Eric Cantona, Roy Keane, David Beckham, Dennis Bergkamps, Frank Lampard and Steven Gerrard.
