Kun: Among Top 100 Sports Figures of the Decade
This week, the Konex Foundation, Argentina's most prominent cultural organization, released their ranking for the Top 100 Sports Figures of Argentina for the 2010-2019 decade. The roster, composed of five athletes for each of 21 disciplines in Argentine sport, was announced by chairman Dr Luis Ovsejevich and Emanuel Ginobili, president of the Grand Jury of the 2020 Konex Awards.
Kun placed in the top 5 Argentine football players abroad, alongside Leo Messi, Angel Di Maria, Gonzalo Higuain, and Javier Mascherano.
After the decision of the Konex Foundation and the Grand Jury to resume their usual awards ceremonies, adapting them to the pandemic, the prestigious Konex Awards were handed out this year for the 41th time. This would be the 5th time that sporting personalities are recognised in their own category, with precedents every turn of the decade: 1980, 1990, 2000 and 2010.
The Grand Jury itself is composed by 20 personalities that have been recipients of the Konex Awards previously, and presided by the retired basketball ace himself. Ginobili is joined by Gabriela Sabatini as special guest judge, as well as secretary general Hugo Porta. All members of the jury must exclude themselves from consideration.
Due to restrictions on indoor events, the award-giving ceremonies must deviate from their usual form, and each of the winners will be contacted and presented with a diploma personally.
